When it comes to discernment, many people have quietly decided they have the ability or not.
Or maybe they’ve chosen a life where they turn over their power to discern to others, without giving themselves a chance, and never once exercised their power of discernment.
Discernment is a skill you build through deliberate practice, even if you were born with discerning characteristics.
Some people have natural aptitude for discernment—they are naturally attentive, emotionally open, and reflective.
But discernment is primarily a skill that develops through practice and feedback.
Each of the seven dimensions can be strengthened:
perception through attention
interpretation through dialogue
criterion through clarification
telos through inquiry
commitment through integrity
disposition through character work
calibration through learning
Most people’s discernment is far less developed than it could be.
